Specific Needs
BASICS

Almost no-one goes to university from an ideal place.
But if you have specific needs relating to health or your situation it is important to consider how they may affect your studies before you get to university.
Not everybody comes to university in ‘perfect’ health or without specific needs. In fact, a significant number of undergraduates face hurdles during their studies and it is essential to consider any issues around this before starting your course.
We discuss some common problems below BUT please be aware that (1) these are general discussions and (2) historyskills.uk can only offer advice on studying history. If you are faced with these kinds of issues, you will need to contact Student Services BEFORE going. They will be able to provide specific information and tailored advice.
Impediments to learning
Many excellent students face problems with sensory or mobility issues and/or health problems which can restrict or impede their access to learning.
Thankfully, many universities are now able to offer support with things like helpers to write notes, audio description and adapted technologies.
If this is something that affects you, please ensure that, before you go to university, you have discussed your specific needs and explored support opportunities with Student Services.
In addition, if you do not have issues yourself, please consider volunteering to help those students who need extra support.
Marriage/Childcare
As the age when undergraduates enter university continues to rise, it is increasingly common for married students and/or those with families to be among student cohorts.
Universities are becoming aware of this, and some can offer tailored help (such as flat-style accommodation or childcare).
As always, check with Student Services before you go.
Financial help
With the rising cost of living and the recent increase in tuition fees, it can be difficult for some students to attend university due to limited means.
One of the reasons for creating History Skills UK was to provide a budget-friendly source of advice for those students who have had limited opportunities in life.
Universities are aware of financial restrictions, and nearly all can offer bursaries or specific funding to help. In most cases this involves provision of a laptop or help with buying textbooks, but there are a range of schemes available.
There are also private and society funding opportunities targeted at helping history undergraduates.
We understand that it can sometimes be difficult to ask for help, but we recommend exploring opportunities for support early as these small things can often have a huge impact on your ability to succeed at university.
